Sedate Sydney to Hair-raising Hanoi

The din of honking drifts in through the open window. Sitting on the 5th floor of the post-ironically named Serenity Hotel in the heart of the old quarter of Hanoi, I have a few moments to reflect on a hectic day of travel.

The ride to the Sydney Airport likely left some of  the passengers with long term health effects. Our driver, a much mis-understood eastern European man, was fighting off a constant barrage of phone calls, flipping through and writing in his bookings, all whilst swerving through traffic with some all-too-near misses and yelling "I SPELL NAME FOR STREET PLEASE!".

The majority of the passengers were dumped with their luggage on the sidewalk of the domestic terminal looking extremely frazzled, while we tore off toward the international terminal. By chance I looked back to see a very familiar black bag sitting on the curb as we sped away, and ended up sprinting back to get it whilst our driver apologized profusely.

The flights were long and somewhat uneventful, and after a short stop in Bangkok(the most massive airport I have seen), we landed in Hanoi. What a happening place!

If the ride in from the airport is any indication of what is to come we have some real adventure ahead of us. Horns are used to let each other know that you are there, or perhaps just indicating that you would like to make another lane of traffic where clearly only two fit, or perhaps you want to drive the wrong way down the highway - just toot away and all traffic laws suddenly bend to suit your needs.

Our hosts at the hotel so far have been extremely friendly, and we are looking to get a quick trip in to Halong Bay before the others arrive. We also realized that Vietnam doesn't do Facebook, so stick to email or post here for the time being.

Here is the proposed route we are thinking (still have to figure out how to get through Cambodia back to Bangkok).

We had a great time in Sydney: we hung out with Sarah, some old friends from Zimbabwe, got in some swimming at the beaches, and did everything but cycle. Here are some pics for those of you who hate reading.

A Monica-sized kangaroo otherwise known as a wallaby - also a great photo exhibition at the museum in Sydney

2450kms to Christchurch and on to Sydney

Since we last posted, a lot has happened:

We said goodbye to our friends in Queenstown, and set out for Christchurch through the Mackenzie District (made famous as the plains of Gondor in LOTR I think) and the plains of Canterbury.
One last look at Queenstown

The type of riding was notably different than in other parts. Most notable were the winds. On one particular day, there was a side/headwind that built all day. At one stage, we had to walk the bikes for several kilometers as we were being blown onto the road by the wind. Thankfully for the last 10 kms of that day, the road took a turn to put the wind at our backs and were soon cruising at 43km/h on the flat without pedaling.

In fairness, for each day that we cycled into a headwind, the following day seemed to have a tailwind. The expression on passing cyclists faces were a sure sign of which way it was today. And after a long day of pedaling into a headwind, our 2450km odyssey in New Zealand was finally over when we arrived at New Brighton beach in Christchurch.

Fitting that we get our first "sheep jam" on our last day of riding

We spent some wonderful time with Rudy and Marlene (friends that we met in Brazil) in Christchurch. They took us on a hike around the hills of Christchurch, loaned me some gear so that I could go kitesurfing with them, showed us some great restaurants, ran us around town to do some last minute shopping/etc for our bikes to prep for SE Asia and treated us like royalty. We were very thankful for the time we got to spend with them and hope we can treat them to the same sometime in the future too.

Great session in Christchurch (yellow kite is me!)

We are now  spending time with another friend from our past, Sarah, and being treated to the sites and sounds around Sydney. We are also frantically trying to prepare ourselves for our imminent arrival in Hanoi in less than 10 days now.

We have just recently had 3 more welcome additions to us cycling around SE Asia. Look for more of John, Bridget and Kristina in the coming weeks! I guess the reviews from Dave, Sharon and Travis must have been positive!
